I am having problems do the "dips behind the back" with the correct form. Is there another exercise to accomplish the same goal or a trick to doing them correctly? I also don't know how to do the "vertical bench crunches." Is there a substitute? I don't have a bench at home or the lifestyle to go to the gym. Thanks for your help.

Why don't you have the lifestyle to go to the gym? And what type of lifestyle is required to go to the gym?

A four year old little girl, a seven month old nursing boy, a part-time job requiring 20 hours per week, A full-time job requiring 40 hours per week, and a part-time student, requiring 20 hours per week including studying. For me to get everything done I need to do, I sleep about 5 hours a night or less. I am just trying to look better, feel better, and get off this pregnancy weight during my spare moments, which are extremely few. Thanks for any advice you have for someone who has made the decision to workout at home, and cannot afford to buy the equipment. If I could buy the equipment, I would not have two jobs and be working on my degree to get a better one.

beckys, just try to do the best you can on the dips behind the back. my wife had problems at first too, but now through her 2nd week she is pumping them out like a champ. try and find a nice firm surface to use, not a couch. it helped her alot to use my weigh bench instead!
vertical bench crunches could be a bit more difficult to simulate. perhaps an ironing board propped on a chair? Problem is locking your feet I would think. Hmm?

I don't know about the vertical bench crunches. If I do crunches at home, I use a fitness ball. I think you could get the same range of motion with it. I found one at Target that came with a pump for $15.
The dips behind the back were very difficult for me at first too. I felt uncoordinated and like I wasn't doing them properly. It helped to use the coffee table instead of the couch, and it got easier the more I did it.
