Are you eating at night because you are hungry or because of habit?

If it is because of habit, then you are going to have to use good old fashioned will power. I have a very hard time not eating at night. It is simply a habit from when I was in high school and college. If this is your situation, you could take a picture of your "love handles" and hang it on the cabinets and refrigerator with the words "Do I want this?" on it; then hang a picture of what you want to look like next to it with the words "Or do I want this?". Might help you think twice before eating just to eat.

If it is because you are hungry, from my understanding, it's ok to eat something if you wake up at 1:30. Just don't eat carbs or fat. :) Something like tuna would be good I think. Or maybe egg whites.

how many meals do you eat in a day. try eating six and you can schedule the last one for 10 p.m. but make sure it is only protein. by "going through the cabinets" do you mean you consume junk food. if it is the latter realize it is counterproductive to your wish to lose the love handles. the previous post gave a good "trick" which may stop you from snacking at night, but it may not.

Sounds like you are doing it from habit, which is a mental need. I was the exact same way. I'm still that way when it comes to chocolate.

If you live alone or with people who will cooperation, get rid of all of the junk. I don't allow junk food in my home anymore. That way, if I go to look in the pantry, there is no junk there for me to eat.

Try the picture idea. It might help. If it doesn't, you could get more harsh and put a huge sign with bright red letters that says, "Do you want to get rid of those love handles fatty!?". :) Different types of motivation work for different people. But only you can stop. You have to want it bad enough.

you are having late night cravings, the only thing i can suggest is have determination realize what the consequences will be if you do it all the time, your the one who is going to have to deal with the problems the next day not anyone else...just think positive and you will fight those cravings...

candy is a definite no-no. soda, if you have a cheat day drink decaf on that day, a couple of cookies on that day too. try to just keep reminding yourself you can have some on your cheat day, works for me. the best suggestion would be to not buy any with your groceries though(if thats possible).
