..differences between regular squats and "frontal squats"(where you keep the barbell on the front side of your shoulders)? I hate this frontal squat since it burns my skin and it if difficult to get a proper grip. So I usually replace this with regular squats.

I believe the front squat, by shifting the weight forward, puts a bit more emphasis on your hammies and glutes. You should be able to substitute freely so long as you're keeping those hamstrings up with your quads.
