cardio intervals / inexplicable gains...suggestions?

i started off a little too ambitious and ended up going in reverse. it wasn't a bad workout, but i did have this metallic taste in my mouth when i was finished -- kind of like i was going to cough up blood. shady? i think so.

warm up:
5 min @ 3mph/2.5 incline
interval 1:
1 min @ 7.5mph/2.5 incline
1 min @ 3mph/2.5 incline
2 min @ 7.5mph/2.5 incline
1 min @ 3mph/2.5 incline
interval 2:
1 min @ 7mph/2.5 incline
1 min @ 3mph/2.5 incline
2 min @ 7mph/2.5 incline
1 min @ 3mph/2.5 incline
interval 3:
1 min @ 6.5mph/2.5 incline
1 min @ 3mph/2.5 incline
2 min @ 6.5mph/1.5 incline
1 min @ 3mph/1.5 incline
interval 4:
1 min @ 6mph/1.5 incline
1 min @ 3mph/1.5 incline
2 min @ 6mph/0 incline
6 min @ 3mph/10 incline
cool down:
5 min

ok, now the inexplicable gains part. i have seriously gotten HUGE. i'm not talking a little extra muscle mass, i'm talking splitting my shirt sleeves, shoulders exploding, "are you on steroids?" huge. my girlfriend's mom even said something to her about how enormous i'm growing. the funny thing is, i am not eating anywhere near enough to bulk, but i've put on 5lbs and it's all muscle.

how is it that i can be hoovering between 1900-2400 calories a day when my maintenance calories are 3100 and still be making these kinds of gains? has my body converted into a testosterone factory? i guess it's good for some things but it's getting to the point where i'm a little self conscious about my size.

that will be my ranting for today -- i don't want to post this on the boards because i don't want to deter women from lifting, so comments or suggestions would be welcome.
