On the Olympic lifters vs. powerlifters thread we've been hashing over how strength training and explosive training are interelated but also distinct and how one one supports the other. We also talked about how most sports require a combination of qualities such as strength, speed, power and quickness/agility.
Individual sports often have their own particular lingo to express these fundamental attributes. One sport that is really fascinating in this respect is cycling. What makes cycling unique is the role that gear selection will also play in how one is able to transfer power to ther rear wheel. In track cycling the gear is fixed (cannot freewheel) and the appropriate gear ratio must be selected prior to the event.
Marty Nothstein is the current olympic gold medalist and multiple world champion in both the match sprint and keirin events. The guy is a physical freak of nature (and training). This is a very interesting interview on his tuning his training approach for the Sydney Olympics. It encompasses many of the topics that were discussed on the olympic vs. powerlifter thread.

so it is possible to be both a "power" lifter, and olympic?
I like the clean, but I have problems with it, cause my arms are so big. The weight isn't on my chest, its like 3in in front of it?
-------------- ....I\'m probably in my underwear typing this......or maybe not!

Both powerlifting & weightlifting have to be trained for specifically, however some athletes have done very well in both & some have successfully crossed over from one to the other.
Getting back to sprint cycling, what did you think about the interview? Did it make sense?
