Hi all. New here as of yesterday. New to the whole exercise thing, have three kids and never had to diet or exercise so I need all the help I can get. First off, I'm 5'8" 200lbs. with a body fat of 26% according to the calculator. I've been doing tae bo and another exercise show on TV. I also have one of those Gazelles, but it didn't do anything for me as far as helping to take anything off. As far as my nutritional profile, my protein is 200g, carbs is 400g, fats is 33g and total calories is 2664. I didn't even come close to these yesterday. My calories were under 1000. Not because I'm starving myself, I just don't eat much until dinner. Is that one of my problems for not being able to take off some lbs.? Another problem is my body builds muscle easy and I don't want more muscle, I want fat off. Can someone please help me? Thanks in advance.

Good morning Melissa :o)
Some of us are in the learning stages ourselves <smile> but will gladly assist you any way possible.
What does your week generally look like? What type of foods are you eating? Do you workout at home? How much cardio do you generally get on a daily basis? Do you have access to a gym or weights at home?

Hey Jef,
My week is at home!! I don't eat much food, mainly dinner. Dinners are usually homemade chicken pot pie (not the store bought stuff!), grilled pork ribs, grilled chicken, pork cutlets, with sides of corn or green beans. Those are usually our dinner menus. If I eat lunch, I might fix a grilled cheese but that's not very often. Just don't get hungry until dinner. I've been drinking plenty of water. I do work out at home, hard to go to a gym with two small ones!! No gym around here watches kids!! As far as cardio, I do a 45 minute tae bo tape in the mornings. I'd like to walk, but can't get very fast with a two year old and a four year old!! (Don't have a two person stroller!) Don't have access to a gym right now, can get some hand weights though. Just weighted myself this morning and in the two weeks since I have been working out have gained four pounds. :(

First, welcome to FT. :)

I am about where you are. I'm 5'7-1/2" and 205lbs. I also build muscle easily and want the fat gone. I found that the nutritional profile here was too many carbs and too many calories for me to accomplish this.

At the advice of a few here, I went to 205g protein, 140g carb, and 45g fat and total calories around 1800. And I still have a hard time getting this many in a day. I usually end up with only 1600 calories and feel so full I could burst a lot of the day. I was also told that the food should be only clean foods. Chicken breast, tuna, salmon, lean beef, kidney beans, lima beans, black beans, brown rice, whole grain bread, cottage cheese, cheese, milk, vegetables (no potatoes, corn, or peas), apples, grapefruit, strawberries, peaches are examples.

I also added weight lifting (heavy weights) twice a week along with 30 minutes of cardio 4 times a week. At first I was scared to do the lifting because I didn't want to just build muscle underneath the fat and push the fat out and look even bigger. But after doing it for a few weeks now, it really has helped make me look slimmer.

Get a heart rate monitor (or if at the gym use those on the machine). From my understanding, your heart rate should remain within a specific range during exercise if your goal is fat burning. My range is 122 - 135. Calorie burning is a higher range for me. A lot of the machines at the gym will add or take away resistance to help keep you in the range for your goals.

Hope this helps.

Just saw your second post. :) Another key is to start breaking your meals up into 5 or 6 small ones a day. This is crucial. It was explained to me that if you don't eat at regular intervals in the day, your body thinks you are fasting and tries to store everything. And drinking plenty of water. I force myself to take in at least 100oz of water a day.

thanks Gwin...
I was going to answer, but you beat me to the punch :o) and did a great job of it.
Really don't have much else to add except perhaps that Whey protein drinks might be used to help obtain extra protein when lacking...
A slow walk is better than no walk at all :o) Nice evening walk for fresh air would be a good thing to lower stress too..for you and the kiddos! Raising children can be stressful-I know just by watching my older sister with my neice and nephews :o)
Take care Melissa

Hey,
See that's my problem too. It's hard for me to eat when I'm not hungry so I don't. Water is also hard for me!! hate the taste!! Have tryed adding lemon, yuch! When I was pregnant with #2, I loved water. Drank it all the time and when I walked out of the hospital I had dropped down to 142lbs. My normal is 170-175lbs ever since 1988. I'll try the eating thing and as you said force myself to drink more water! You'd think with all the technology out there they could at least make water taste good!!!!!

Hmmm, do you drink tap water? Water should not have any taste to it. I recommend drinking lots of water, whether one is dieting or bodybuilding.

As far as eating, once you get your body used to it, eating often becomes second nature. What you don't want your body to do is starve itself. When you eat less (say 3 meals per day), your body HOLDS ON to fat and stores it as an energy reserve. If you want your body to do the opposite, eat more often.

Good luck!

:o) Can't really replace good old H2o in your diet, but they've placed many good posts on here pertaining to the subject of how to make it tastier....Search fitBuddy at the bottom of your screen and check it out...
Just remember (and I have a hard time with it as well) to try and drink as much as you can w/o added ingredients...

I guess this is where one of my Grandfather's favorite sayings comes in: "Suffer to be beautiful!!" Thanks for ya'lls help. Where would I find some good healthy snack or meal recipes besides fruit? Since I don't eat breakfast or lunch the majority of the time what would ya'll suggest?

Yogurt. Starkist makes tuna in a pouch that I don't mind eating straight with a fork. Nuts. Boiled egg whites. Applesauce (sorta goes along with fruits). Oatmeal or whole grain bread. Canned chicken. Cottage cheese. Protein bars.
You could probably fix other foods too and stick them in small tupperware containers to grab on the run.

Carrots, broccoli (could buy a bunch, cut up and place servings in little baggies), soybeans (edamame) and many others.

Hey all,
Just got back from the store. Got bananas, apples, pears, a mango (never tried one of those!), chunk light tuna in the pouch and a loaf of whole wheat bread. So, do I need to fix 5 or 6 amall meals or just kind of snack? Thanks for all of ya'lls help.

Preplanning your meal for each day might be beneficial...to make certain that you are meeting the specified goals.
You could go into the nutritional planner and input the selected foods to get a rough idea of what you consume. Just enter the info until you've met your goal. According to the info I've collected so far, 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day are best.
Might even be easier to set it up on a schedule and keep the same menu until you're fairly comfortable with switching things around.
You could always follow Gwin's suggestion and change your profile since you both are fairly close in height and weight. <Hope this helps some> :o)

dmak2-
Tip for cutting your 1st mango.
Mangos have a large oval pit in them.
Cut the bottom off and you will see a thin flat pit.
The pit is flat so when you cut it you will end up with 4 slices. 2 large ones from the surface of the pit and 2 small ones from the sides of the pit.
I messed my 1st one up and I lost a lot of fruit.

I plan my the meals the day before. Also, I personally try not to have any carbs at all for my last two meals of the day.
