Over the past 6 years I have had 3 surgeries to correct a herniated disc. My last surgery was about a year and a half ago. I have been working out for about 6 months and have been slowly trying to get strngth in my lower back. I have had good results so far. I am now on week 2 of the progressive gains program and am quite enthusiastic about it. My question is this-should I stay away from exercises like the squat and deadlift. If so can I still achieve similar results with other exercises

That ones pretty much your call since you're the only one that knows how strong your lower back and abs are. I had major disk surgery about 15 years ago and after some trial and error, pretty much eliminated dead lifts from my workouts. Squats can and should be a staple but you need to make sure your form is good whether you have back problems or not. I found it easier to really strengthen the ab area and the back seemed to follow along. :)
