Believe it or not, abs are a muscle group...just like biceps, triceps, etc. If you work them, they can get big, even though you may be losing scale or fat weight.

my husband was doing ab workouts while dieting (needs to pass tape to get promoted to sgt), he lost some wieght, but gained inches. what did he do wrong?
i ask because he is telling me not to work on my abs until i lose most of the wieght i want. Yet i know this isnt correct (according to the info on this site, you have to do diet and exercise including some mucle training). basically i want to explain to him what went wrong. he needs to loose inches, he claims the army doesnt care if the inches are fat or muscle. though they do the whole fat % thing and go by that too.

For smaller abs you have to lose weight. Doing crunches and ab exercises with weights actually makes the area and waistline bigger. The best way to lose some inches is to lose weight and use cardio, pilates and core exercises.

ok i understand what your saying, but now i'm confused about the fitness program ft set up for me. i put in that i wanted wieght lose and toned up. and they listed alot of wieght exercises to do including abs. muscle burns fat i understand, but i dont want bigger muscles (espeacially in the back, i already have broad shoulders for a female making my head look small) so i guess the question is, do all muscle training workouts result in bigger muscles? i dont want bulky i want lean. my goal is to lose inches around the waist (and other places) not gain even if it is muscle adding the inches.
