I'm sure some of you have been here. I've been free-trainin' for...nigh on 12 weeks now and instead of seeing results I feel like I'm getting bigger rather than smaller. I know that I'm gaining in muscle, but shouldn't I be losing fat? Answers to probable questions: I've been eating the same way as before I started free trainers, which isn't perfect but it's still good. I work out 5 days a week, do 25-35 mins of cardio 90% of the time and also walk to work every day (25 mins each way). Am I getting too much cardio and not eating enough? (I KNOW I'm not eating the way you guys always talk about eating, like 6 times a day). I've read a couple posts similar to this, people saying that the fat will try to hold on as long as possible and you have to push it. I'm NOT going to stop working out, but I'm just fed up with not seeing looser clothes on my figure. You know? Any thoughts/stories?

wendeh hon - I know you don't want to hear this but how long did it take you to put the weight on? 12 weeks is hardly nothing when it comes to losing weight. I have been told it can take months to figure out what works for your body as far as diet and excercise. Now here comes the support.... I too have been at this 12 weeks (except I paid for a professional trainer) and am still wearing the same size clothes and feel fatter on some days BUT (here's the good news) I HAVE lost 12 pounds and 7% body fat. So how come my clothes aren't looser? I'm not sure myself. The point is you probably are loosing fat and just don't see it. I can hardly tell myself. It's because we don't get to pick where the fat comes off. My butts not smaller, my face isn't thinner BUT a teeny tiny bit of fat has come off my entire body. I have also noticed that the people who are waaaay over weight lose weight faster (grrrr!) hehehe Try tweeking your diet a little (do you really know what you're eating? I was shocked when I started writing it on paper and actually saw the calories and fat grams I was consuming)and changing your excercise program a little (add elevation to the treadmill and don't rely on how much you're sweating to tell you if you're getting the proper workout. Find out what 50 to 70% of your heart rate is and get the maximum results of cardio for the effort you put in). Give your body some shock and awe. It gets used to the routine we put it through. Wecome to FT wendeh.

Have you broken down your diet into calories and p/c/f? You need to do that to at least get some kind of idea as to your baseline calories. I know it's a pain but once you have done it you can more easily manipulate your diet and then evaluate your results. You would be surprised the results many people see with minor changes to diet. You seem to have good dedication, a good attitude, and a good exercise program going on. Take the next step and focus on diet. Also, you really shortchange your diet potential if you don't break your food intake into 5-6 meals. After doing those things have patience and you will see results. Good Luck.

Sounds like you may be going overboard on the cardio, and it's possible you may not be getting enough calories to compensate for it. Sign up for an account at Fitday.com. Easiest way to track what you're actually consuming, among other things, and anyone can do it in a relatively short period of time.

Also, when you do cardio, go for broke. 50-70% of heart rate should be a warmup.

One thing that people don't always think about is what the food they eat is doing inside their body. I have learned quite a bit from my mother (who is an ametuer nutritionist) and there is so much importance in supliments. Make sure you are getting enough calcium and get a multi-vitamin. Also when you microwave your food you are killing much of the vital nutrition you were hoping to get from it. Try eating more raw foods, it helps with digestion and the all around function of your body.
