when it comes to your reps with certain exercises it states do 20 reps for example dumbell curls...is this referring to 10 per arm and thus 20 or 40 in total which seems pretty brutal. sorry if this seems a bit obvious to some but fairly new to this and want to keep in proportion and not to over train certain muscle groups...many thanks bradley

I believe that it is 20 per arm. As you are doing more than 1 set of the exercise you are to use lighter weights for the higher number of reps and increase the weight with each set as the number of reps is reduced. Example

20 reps with 10 lbs
12 reps with 15 lbs
10 reps with 20 lbs
8 reps with 25 lbs

Then, if you can do more than 8 reps in that last set, go ahead till you can't do any more and the next time you do this exercise increase your weight.
