I would like to know from those who have done competitions how long it has taken them to prepare for it since they first started working out. Thanks in advance!

well I think that to gain mass and/ or bring up lagging body parts in time to diet you need ideally, 6 months. 3 months to gain mass and symmetry and 3 to diet down. Because by the time you start dieting, you should have the muscle and proportion you want because by then it is too late.
Just my opinion

I agree 100%.. before you start to diet for the show.. you need to have all the mass / shape / symmetry. Cause the diet will simply shed away the fat and water and reveal the package which you have worked so hard for.

Longer pre-contest diets are recommended so that you maintain as much of your lean muscle mass as possible - so aprox. 16-12 weeks.

I agree 6 months out to concentrate on the symmetry and shape (mass if your doing BB)and 16 weeks for me to diet down. If this is your first contest work with a trainer for 6 months if you can afford it!
