I've never taken protein shakes before and I'm researching some to try when I begin my new workout program (Jan 16 - the Monday after I get my cast off my foot).

The one I've taken a liking to is Pro Performance® Mega Whey Extreme. They come in more flavors than Chocolate (ugh!) and vanilla like Banana Cream and Pink Lemonade (yum!). They also have 60g of protein per serving. Increasing my protein to 145 g (1g/lb), its hard for me to get that amount because I don't eat eggs, and I'm not a big fan of tuna (I'd try tofu, but I can't find it around where I live). I get most of protein from chicken and beef and ham and turkey, but its not enough.

Do you think 60g is too much? Or should I cut my servings in half?

Upon second thought, 60g does seem too high. I found this one, Pro Performance® Whey Protein - Unflavored which is 21g of protein, 100mg of calcium, 2g of carbs and fat. Is this one better, and is it really unflavored?

i usually try to stick around 30 g per serving because i have heard that your body cannot absorb much more than that depending on how much you weigh

Yeah, that's what I realized too (60g was too much). I'm 145lbs, so 21g per serving is good.

When I should I take it? I know I should take one after lifting weights, but when do I take it on non-lifting days?

I use VP2 Whey Isolate (28g per serving). I take it 2 times a day during the work week (work out 5 days a week) and take it 3 times a day on Sat/Sun (my off days).

I've heard the Max your body can absorb at a time is 40 grams. The amount there is heresay - but it is true that your body can only absorb so much at a time...anything extra, your body will flush out.

make sure you are getting at least 217.5 grams of protein from ALL sources (shakes/bars/food) per day to maintain muscle growth.
I personally use:
ON 100% whey:
first thing waking up (two scoops 48 grams protein)
pre-lunch (one scoop 24 grams protein)
drive home (two scoops 48 grams protein)
POST WORKOUT:
Muscle Juice, but half the rec. serving + one scoop of ON 100% whey (51 grams protein, 75 grams carbs...eveyone forgets the postworkout carbs!
NIGHTIME:
Probolic-SR w/ one scoop ON 100% whey (44 grams protein)

WEIGHT = 235 lbs
