hello,I have been following this site for 6 months and it is great! Thank you all and keep up the good work.
Well,I want to lose fat and tone up a bit, have % 17 body fat (mostly in upper body).I am on FT's progressive training program and do weight training 5 days a week(weekdays) and have 2 days off (weekend).I do cardio 3 times a week, right after weight training.I do HIIT for 20 min. each time.I do take 1200-1500 calories a day that have 100 gr protein at least.
My question, at last :), is: I am confused with the comments for eating after workouts. For weight training,it is said that eat within 1 hour to prevent muscle breakdown, but for cardio (especially for HIIT) do NOT eat for 1 hour to boost the fat loss.I do both weight training and cardio on my workout day and can not change this routine due to work,so what to do?
thank you for the responses once again.

Actually, what you need after an intensive weight training session is a protein shake. If you supplement with this, then take it instead of eating.

A protein shake is good within 1/2 hour after your workout, but you will want to eat something within an hour after that, especially if you have done any weight training.

First off, why are you going all the way down to 1200? That is way to low. That is about 1300 calories below maint. for you. Unless you want to loose a lot of muscle, I would go no lower than 1000, 500 preferably. If you loose more than 2 lbs a week, you are loosing more than just fat. You need to take in about 164 grams of protein, and divide the rest between fats and carbs. After you workout, you should have a protein shake with a highly glycemic carb such as maltodextrin or dextrose. They are at the top of the GI index.

thanks for the helps, appreciate. I think I asked my question with a wrong way, I meant "protein shake" by eating. I do take a protein shake within 1 hour ( I usually do it immediately or after 20 min) after each weight training. When I do HIIT cardio after weight training, before taking the shake, if I wait an hour after cardio to boost the fat loss, would not that mean muscle loss? Cause a total of 1,5 hours (20-30 min for doing cardio + 1 hour waiting after cardio) pass after weight training, which exceeds the 1 hour critical window after weight training.

Roelof, I know my calorie intake is below sth, lol, but I think my body adjusted itself to this way, I do not lose weight.I see no big loss in muscles but also no noticable loss in fats, either. And after each workout I take a protein shake. I use Ultimate Nutrition whey powder (or GNC isolated soy powder, interchangebly), I mix it with a low fat yoghurt (% 1 fat) and that mixture contains 34 gr. protein, 15 gr. carb and 3 gr. fat. Is this ok?

thank you all.

Taking your protein shake right after your weight training is fine, but I also think your calorie intake is so very low! Maybe, just for me, you can try upping it a bit, because I think you maybe cheating yourself.
