Since I shed a ton of weight and now am finally getting a somewhat noticable muscular frame EVERY single member of my highschools football team is almost demanding that I play since their linemen are rather heavy, slow, and cumbersome and I'm 6'3 on a natural broad shoulder build.

I've got my cardiovascular endurance down (just 4 long jogs are a hard pace a week) and weight training I'm continually improving my technique and learning new excersizes. However the one thing I really want to work at is just my burst speed since that seems to be essential to football. The game is played in short bursts so it would seem it is equally important for the athlete to possess the ability to literally burst out of the tuck position with tremendous power and since it seems almost predetermined that I'll be defensive line according to them I need to increase my sprinting speed.

I'm sure just running will help somewhat but I have about 10 weeks before the season begins and I'd like to increase the speed and power of which my legs can launch myself and continue with a strong fast sprint to break the offensive line.

Recently I started doing hill sprints up a long steep hill just down the road from me, I start off with a lot of power but by the time I reach the top I'm really pleased if I haven't passed out.

Should I start doing power training as well as mass training for my legs? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can convert my new tree trunk legs into a more deadly machine?

Check powerlifting forum, it's been discussed a few times...

generally do olympic style lifts....namely Power Cleans, Snatch, Clean and Jerk and other varieties(they develop the most power and they do it the fastest)....deadlifts are good and so are squats....especialyl jump squats....

try to work 40 yard dash....do 10-20 sets....rest 30-60 seconds and repeat....cut rest time by a couple seconds eveyr couple of workouts....also you can buy a Chute...which will help you develop power....

Since you are a lineman and won't be running routes each play... I suggest you run 10 yards sprints and 20 yard sprints. You can work your way up to 40 yards if you like. Do 20: 10yard Sprints. Do 10: 20 yard sprints. If you do these drills with someone who is faster than you, it will make you work harder.(don't find the fastest person on the team. find someone who is in the same area.) As for the wegihts, I think menace3000's advice is good.

I got a copy of the Bigger Faster Stronger program a lot of people suggested. Just started browsing through it, I'll read the whole thing after finals week is finally over.
