I was at my aunt's house the other week and we had a nice lunch. Afterwards it was time for desert, and the choices were lemon pie, key-lime pie, and a horrendous looking carrot cake. The lemon and lime pies were bought from a bakery and it was announced that the lime one was "sugar free". I chose to have the lime pie (not for health reasons, I just wanted it). Of course, being the only in-shape, healthy person there, they completely objected to me choosing the lime pie for the sole reason that it was sugar-free. They must have thought I was settling for the healthier choice, and to them it must have been an injustice that a young, healthy, teenager would settle for the healthier pie. Of course, the health content of the pies was of absolutely no concern to me, I simply prefered the lime one over the lemon.
What makes this sadder, is the fact that 1 of the objecters had her stomach stapled (gastric bypass I think is what its called...), and several others of the objecters are looking into the operation. Most are chain smokers, and not a single person (except the 4 year old baby) at the entire get-together falls into normal bodyweight category. In fact, only a few of them aren't in the dangerously obese category.
Its odd how people's minds work, huh? The same thing happens at family dinners that occur at restaraunts. A lot of restaraunts have special "healthy" items on their menus that are indicated by a little picture or astericks next to the food title. I hate ordering one of those meals because its inevitable someone will argue with my choice, pointing out that its for people on diets, and that I should not concern myself with the healthiness of a food. (even though I usually am just choosing by preference)
Well, thats actually not as funny as I had originally thought... but I guess it demonstrates some of the foolish things people in our society do.
