Hey I was checking out the cereals on the shelf at the grocery store and I came to looking at this cereal. Man this stuff has 14 grams of dietary fiber per serving! (that's half a cup by the way) It has 60 calories overall, but I have a question about the dietary fiber. Do they count these calories? I don't think they do. It says it has 22 carbs, and only 60 calories. But then in front of the box, it says that it only has 10 grams of net carbs. I don't really understand. I've heard that they don't count those calories because the dietary fiber is indigestible. I think that's what it is. Where you can't digest it. But does that mean that it has no impact on you whatsoever and that you can forget about counting those calories, or should you still count them?

Fiber is a kind of carb, however it has no effect on blood suger levels......so just cound the 60calories or whatever.........I'd make sure I was near a bathroom though lol........

I'd do like 1/2 a cup, and mix it with another kind of cerial that actually has flavor, all that fiber can't taste good, maybe some smart start w/ protein, or rasin brain.

Well, yeah that's what I do. Or that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to add it to cheerios. It doesn't taste bad at all. In fact it kinda taste a bit sugary. That's another good thing about it. It has absolutely no sugar. This stuff is really good. lol about the bathroom, it hasn't made me go to the restroom yet. I even ate it with 1/3 cups of oatmeal, half a cup of cheerios and an apple. It hasn't made a difference.

We lack the enzymes necessary to digest insoluble fiber, so it has no caloric value (same reason it creates no increase in blood sugar levels.)

So actually it has 22 grams of carbs and 10 grams of net carbs is exactly what deadheaded said.
The 12 grams of non impact carbs will have a negligible impact on your blood sugar levels.
Company's will soon be labeling that stuff as low carb.

The FDA permits manufactures to define "Net carbs" as total carbohydrates minus fiber content (fiber contains indigestible carbs).
Found that in Dec M&F (hers).

FYI, net carbs are the fiber carbs subtracted from the total carbs. As others have stated the fiber doesn't raise blood sugar, so it is counted out. Probably important if you are counting your carbs/day.
