Hello there,

I am 18 years old, doing cardio every other day now for 30-60min. I'm changing school, I must bike 16km(9,9 miles).. it's okay, but that's roughly 32km a day, I think a b it more actually. Should I still incorporate a regular cardio exercise anyway? (Like biking an hour on top of that.)

Thanks,

Bye! :)

If you are just riding to school, pedaling then coasting coasting down hills, then you should not consider it cardio.
BUT....if you are riding to school, continuously peddeling, getting your HR up for at least 10 min, then consider it your cardio for the day.
Have fun, and welcome to freetrainers. Please fill out your profile.

Hey carivan,

I don't really experience er.. hills here. Flat country. :) I tried it today with a meter, when I bike at a descent pace my heart rate goes up to 140, rising to 150 when some wind strikes me.. maybe it has to do with my poor condition.. anyway, I think I can get my HR up the whole time really.. is 140-150 enough?

Thanks for answering, and I will fill out my profile soon.
Bye!

140-150 is probably a reasonable start, but as you get fitter you will find your heart rate doesn't get as high as this on your cycle to school, as it becomes more efficient.

Most people recommend training in certain heart rate zones

You calculate your maximum heart rate as 220 - your age = 202 in your case.

If you haven't been doing much exercise then working at 65 - 75% of your maximum heart rate is a good place to start ( so 131- 151)

As you get fitter you can increase to 80 or 85% of your maximum heart rate - so you may need to add extra sessions once you get fitter, but 25-30 minutes would do, you don't need to do a whole hour.

When you have done this for a while and are getting really fit, think about adding HIIT sessions (do a search on fitbuddy) or try cycling on more hilly terrain.
