I am 26 years old, 5'6", 230 lbs. I do not wish to become overly musculer, but I realize that muscle is essential to weight loss. I have access to a weight machine at my apartment complex. I can do leg presses, calf extensions, thigh extensions, curls, tricep extensions, vertical and horizontal hand bench press, butterflys, lat pull downs, reverse deltoid flys, seated rows, shrugs, and a couple other exercises that my husband does on this machine.

Along with eating right, how should I begin with the weight training? again, I don't wish to become a bodybuilder, but I want to do what it takes to getdown to around 180 lbs, preferably 150, but I'm trying to be realistic.

I have tried the atkins diet, with a little success (lost about 20 lbs), but have since realized the importance of carbs when doing alot of exercise.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can get me started with a good diet (what to eat and what not to eat) as well as a weight training program.

I also have access to a treadmill and stationary bicycle which I already use often. Any advice on how much of these things I should do, how often, and how to incorporate it into my weight lifting would also be greatly appreciated.

So thanks again. I'm excited to be part of the community.

Hi sheryl. You can get everything you need here at FT. Sign up for the exercise plan that meets your needs. You can fill out the nurtitional info and there is a guide on what to eat. Most folks are surprised by how high the calories are in the FT plan but they are guidelines.

It requires that you accuratly count calories . As your weight drops you will lower your daily calories but it's important not to undereat. You can tweak and finetune your diet as you learn. In the nutritional message board the very first post is entitled "grocer list for the body builder. The food there is what you want to eat.

The most important things you can do are 1 stick to it. 2 Educate yourself here on exercise and how and what to eat. For instance if you eat 5 or6 small meals a day you will boost your metabolism tremendously.

Ask lots of questions and keep coming back.

I don't think the Atkins is good for you. Try Sugar Busters. www.sugarbusters.com A way of eating... really. They have a bulletin board on their site. I lost 46pds with that woe and maintained. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

This website has loads of info. I'm relatively new here too. I'd suggest not trying to digest all the info at once. Learn it in bits and pieces.
