ur heart is made of cardiac muscle, it is a combination of smooth muscle, and straited muscles.....smooth( organ) is a visceral muscle and straited is skelatal) cardiac muscle has interclated dics( i think is what they are called) that make the muscle contrac as a whoel and give it stability, since it is a combination of smooth and straited it can be conditioned just liek any other muscle, just liek when u 1st worked out u was sore, well the heart don't get sore lol or fatigued if it did we would all be dead lol but it can be made stonger which enables it to pump blood throught the body better, this is y u get out of breath, ur heart is "outaa shape" so to speak and it is doin't its best to get blood to to lungs then to ur body to get oxygen to the muscles, the more u run, and longer your heart gets stronger and stronger, and can get more blood to ur body quicker so u don't fatigue as quickly.....trying doing moderate cardio for a while, then " burn" go as fast as u can for like 2 mins, then go back to moderate, for 5 mins or so , then "burn" again, after a while increse to where ur only moderate for 4 mins and " burning" for 3 mins" , then u can go moderate for 3 mins and " burn" for 4 mins..... pretty soon what will be ur "burn" will be more moderate fro you, and ur next " burn" will be even faster, keep it up and i promise everything will work out-------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! |

If you have never done cardio before, start off by walking on the treadmill, at about 4mph for about 10 min. Don't forget yo warm up for 3 min at about 3mph. Don't forget, you are still a smoker and the breathing will be difficult.
@ minutes before you finish, drop the speed back to 3. That way you won't get dizzy when you stop. Not knowing your age, we cant tell you your Heart rate levels. Hope this helps. Please fill out your profile. BTW I answered your email. -------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

Hi AnnaP,
Good to see that you are going to go for it, quitting the smokes will make your life easier and improve your cardio abilities, however only you will be able to quit and only when you are ready, good luck. I agree with the comments above and would like to add one other point for you. Set yourself achieveable and meaningful goals. Starting slow is perfect, but you must progress over time. So if its walking great, just decide that minimum will be twenty minutes for cardio in week one. During week two split the cardio into equal periods of 20 minutes and thirty minutes and so on. Decide now when you'd like to see yourself running and commit to challenging that date. You'd do well to attempt a short jog during the middle of a walk say in two - three weeks time. If you are walking for thirty minutes then after ten break into a jog for ten minutes and then ease back down to a walk for the last ten. Obviously you can play with the ratios to suit your level of fitness and capability and before you know it you'll be running for twenty minutes and be well on your way to meeting your weight goals etc./ Cheers. Warren. |

You have made a good decision. Everyone has pretty much given you great tips. To summatize, start out slow, but challenge yourself at the same. -------------- It's not what we eat or drink occasionally, but what we consume on a daily basis that determines our ongoing level o health. formerfatguy.com Not sure of author |

How about "Running Shoes" ! Couldn't resist.
When you go to buy a pair of shoes, tell the sales person what your goals are. There are many different brands and types of shoe for different purposes. Also keep in mind your weight, as that plays a big factor on the wear of the shoe, and how it will soften the impact. If you are running indoors, a good cross training shoe would be ok, but if outdoors, you would need a different sole. Look for something like, saucony, asics, new balance, to name a few. -------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

I get horrible shin splints when I run as well... I was a cheerleader in high school so there was constant stress on my shins from the jumps... now when I run i am almost always gaurenteeing (I know... that's prolly incorrect grammar... and I'm an english major... figures) myself sore and painful shins afterwards... I too have tried different shoes and all but with no luck. Oh well... I guess I just have to keep strengthening them.
