Need a buddy/someoen with experience in 'cutting'

I've been exercising 5 days a week for the last month and I've lost about 6 pounds.  While this does feel good in a way, I don't really love what I'm seeing in the mirror.  The fat around my waist hasn't reduced at all and I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my diet.

I've basically cut out all fast food and soda which for me would lead to a significant calorie reduction since I was having it for almost every meal before.  I've been making salads with chicken, spaghetti with meat sauce and having tuna or turkey sandwiches with a mix of fresh raw vegetables as sides.

I can see some muscle gain so I assume I've lost fat, but I'm just not sure I'm doing it in the most efficient and healthy way.  I've read about how the body stores fat when it goes into starvation mode and I definitely don't want that to happen.

My snacks are low fat yogurt with granola and dried berries, mixed dried fruit and nuts, baby carrots, and fresh fruit.
I've also started having a 1 scoop protein shake with milk in the mornings before I go to work.

If anyone has any advice on how I can make sure I'm losing fat and not cannibalizing muscle I'd really appreciate it.  Any quick and easy (healthy) snacks or meals would also be appreciated.

I'm new to the site and would like to find a couple people who are as serious as I am about losing the weight so that we can buddy up and support each other.  Men or women, doesn't matter.  I'm fully dedicated to this and would love to get some advice from a guy that's gone from somewhat flabby to 6-pack ripped.

Thanks all and good luck on your own journey.
