Introduction

I'm 41. Recently, I saw a fellow my age at the grocery store in one of those motorized scooters. I couldn't help but think why he wanted or needed that cart, and what must have happened to him to bring him to this state. As I pondered his situation, I assessed mine and realized that I have no right to judge. I'm closer to needing a scooter than running a marathon. So it is time to do something about it.

I weigh 247 lbs. This is the most I've ever weighed. Twenty years ago, I was known for my level of fitness. It was part of my identity. I played (small school) college football. I don't need to return to football playing shape but I do need to lose about 50 pounds and attain a reasonable level of fitness.

Goals and motivation

I wish to lose 50 pounds, and attain an overall level of fitness. I am motivated by an epiphany of the magnitude of my personal decay.

I've already signed up for a marathon in October. I've never run a marathon before. In fact, I've never run any distance / endurance race of any kind before.

Thank you. I should report that thus far I have not lost a pound, but I am (mostly) able to jog for 30 minutes straight (a little over three miles) on a consistent basis.
