When you lose your drive to get up and go to the gym think of a few things....it helps me that I have SEEN this. At my Y there are two guys and two women that always amaze me. All four are at a disadvantage, in terms of fitness or so most would think. First the two guys. One is about 40 yrs old. One arm is deformed and very much shorter than the other. He is in the gym 4-5 days a week lifting weights...I see him there doing DB presses curls etc day in and out and I am amazed! Most with his condition would just let it rule their lives...he may not be built like a Bodybuilder but I think he is way ahead of the game. The second guy has one leg...yup one leg...he has a fake leg and what amazes me is his strength....he does dips with 120lbs of weight on a belt....he is around 250-300lbs himself. But even more impressive is the fact he benches over 300 for reps..hard enough for most with all their limbs....that is what makes me feel shame when I make an excuse not to lift or do cardio.

The women...one of them has a leg shorter than the other, and she is in her 60's. Yet she is there doing her exercises including cardio 5 days a week! WHat better motivation can I have than to see her there and not want to do less? The other women is in her 30's and has both legs in braces.....she needs crutches to get around, yet always has a smile on her face and she is there lifting and swimming all week long.

Folks I know for me seeing these 4 there is a huge motivation for me.....just wanted to share that when you are tired, your kids are cranky and you can not go to the gym(like me last night LOL) think of these 4 that easily have a reason not to be happy and or active, and get off your butt!

I'll bet...at my old gym (before my company moved) there was a drawf that used to come in there. Not that I'm making fun of the guy at all...but he was so small he didn't have the size or the strength to open the front doors...he'd wait outside till someone was coming in or out. Regardless he was there everyday doing what he could.

Reminds me of one of my contests. There was a wheelchair class, and just seeing them there and the 'feeling' one got from "if these guys can do it".

Man, and the audience gave such a thundering applause for them, we could hear it all the way back in the pump up room.

Very moving stuff....thanks for sharing Mutt.

Thanks. IT simply amazes me to see all of them, and I am sure there are more, there all the time....let alone accomplish some of the things they do....

Cool story!!

I like finding my motivation in intervals. For instance, at 1st I started a "Biggest Loser" comp on one the forums I frequent. Had about 23 people sign up and participate. After that sort of fizzled, i used my family.I met them at Texas Stadium for the Cowboys game last weekend. Now, we have plans to go back to my home town in April to see old friends I haven't seen in a few years. And of course, my family is there so I am motivated to make as big a difference between last weeknd when they sawe me, and April when I'll see them again.
After that, I'll find another motivation.

Even as motivational as the people in your gym are, it can wear off after a period of time. I like when my motivation changes every few months!

I tell you each time I try to wuss out of cardio or weight or the like I think of tht gal with both legs pretty much useless getting in and out of the machines, or of the guy with the one leg benching 150lbs more than I, well it makes me work that much harder.

Maybe the girl who had posted about feeling "self-conscious" in the gym will read this and use it as motivation also :

I wish she would. I went into the Y the other day, saturday to just mess around. No kids meant time to relax a bit. The young lady with the braces was in there. I sparked a conversation with her. Her name is tracy. She has been unable to fully use her legs for 10 years, not sure why. I told her she was an insprition to me. and she actually blushed. Each time she sits she has to "unlock" her knee joint on the braces, and each time she gets up they relock...moving in and out of machines is tough for her. Man makes my gout look rather sad.
