I've seen a lot of folks that get by with the patch. Do a net search for the American Cancer Society. They have quite a bit of info up about how to alter your routine along with some helpful advice.

Not only will smoking interfere with your workouts, but also will render any supplements you're taking useless. I quit smoking many years ago using the nicorette gum. They have a product called Zyban. This is a pill that is prescribed by a doctor. I've turned a friend on to this and she quit within 3 months! Why don't you look it up on the web: www.zyban.com.

Good luck!

Well, put it this way. Smoking increases the levels of toxins introduced into the bloodstream. So, instead of the bloodstream carrying nutrients into the muscles, it's working overtime to distribute the toxins. Also, smoking causes nitrogen imbalance, which then impedes the delivery of protein.

Here are other chemicals that are one gets from smoking: cyanide, benzene, formaldehyde, methanol (wood alcohol), acetylene (the fuel used in torches), and ammonia.

Best thing to do is quit! I quit several years ago...it was hard, but I have no regrets!!!

what the hell, my post didn't go through a few days ago.

Anyways, I just quit smoking about 70 days ago. Try www.quitnet.com! It rocks. It's a place where smokers help smokers quit. Lots of help and strategies on quiting and talks about all the drugs and patches and stuff. Give it a try!

Just download your self of nice looking picture of a cancerous lung and make it your desktop wallpaper. You could even print and post it on your refrigerator at home and use it as a diet aid. Nobody can quit for you. You have to do it. After 24 hours it's all mental addiction. How strong is your mind? Are you week and will given to a little smoke that does you no favors? JUST DO IT! Put you mind to it and say NO! and do it. Come-on I'm sure you’re stronger then a little tobacco. AREN’T YOU?

Rock on Nellie. I am 5 months without smoking and I used the patch. Just for informational purposes I tired Zyban also and the only problem I found with it was that you could not drink while taking it. I was 20 when I tried to quit, and liked to drink. So I would not take my medicine one day so I could drink, but then I'd end up smoking. So if you're someone who enjoys drinking I recommend the patch or gum. Just my two bits. And damn lots ex-smokers here. :)

It happens. People say the third week is the worst. I didn't relax until about 1 month after I was off the patches.

Are you still on the patch? If you are, you should be able to lose it at this point. I assume you are on the step 3 phase...very little nicotine on the patch itself?

Go for a run, hide yourself in the shower or get hands on a jumping rope and jump away.

Just don't think about it and keep yourself busy with something else.

We are with you jnellie so DON'T GIVE IN!!!!

Everytime I felt the urge for a cig I went running. People at work thought I was insane because for no apparent reason I'd just go run around the building a couple times. Good luck man. The first few weeks off the patch can be tough.

Nah...after the initial physical withdrawals, the mental ones take over! Those are the ones that make it tough. It becomes a true mind test...

Also, be very careful, urges will start sneaking out of no where and bite you!

Remember the more cardio you do the faster your lungs will heal. They generally say 8 weeks before your lungs are like you never smoked, but with lots of exercise you can drop that to 6.

I'm planning to quit next week (once final exams are over). Nice to hear about someone succeeding at quitting for a change...gives me hope. Have tried using the patch in the past, but it gives me a rash anywhere I put one, so I will have to try the gum (mmm, yummy). If you can stop after 24 yrs, I guess I should be able to stop after 11.
NBH...thanks for the post about quitnet.com. Will check it out.

I quit smoking back in Aug 2001. Previously, I tried everything, patches, gum, you name it and ended up smoking again a few months later. This time I went cold turkey and to take my mind off smoking I followed nutrition guidelines and spent lots of time cooking good meals instead of the junk I was eating. Lost lots of weight and then took the next step...body building. I've never felt better! Good luck...it's well worth the effort!
