Are there any reasons that it couldn't be performed while on one's knees?

No...give it a try ..there's also a James Lift where you press overhead while in a squatting position ...

I'd do them seated..before on my knees. It would suck to fall back hit yoru head or do somthing to your knee.

or go outside and do them?
