Hi:
I'm a new member of this community and I'm looking for alternatives to get into shape at home, because of the limited time I have to go to a gym. My 12 year old son needs a lot of attention beacuse of his ADHD condition, and it doesn't left me with enough time to go to the gym. I'm trying to make a gym at home, but I don't know what I need.

Exercise before you son gets up in the morning. Start by watching some exercise programs, FITTV has many that are good if you haven't exercised much before and will help you with proper form and some exercise ideas. You will find that with some practice you will soon learn what you enjoy which will lead you to know what you need.
In the meantime, my "home gym" staples always included a yoga mat (good for other things too, not just yoga), dumbells, ankle weights, and a core ball. I still have these things laying around in case the gym is ever closed, or I'm sick and can't go or something.
You can also fill out your fitness profile and sign up for a home workout routine. It will give you an idea of what you may need.

Resistance bands are also great, and if you get two, you canmabe do the exercises with your son. I'm pretty sure it won't harm him, just get the easiest one for him. My "home gym" also have a small trampoline that I use instead of a treadmill.

I have a set of free weights and an elliptical trainer on my back porch at home....I usually work out in the morning after I drop my daughter off at school. Do it for yourself honey...you have to make time!!:)

As someone who was diagnosed with a learning disability which was later diagnosed as ADHD, I recommend you have your son exercise with you. When I was in Junior High I was on so many medications I was like a zombie. It wasn't until I started wrestling and weightlifting that I finally managed to do well in school. I graduated with a 3.9GPA and I'm now a double major in biomechanics and industrial engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I'd never be here if it wasn't for weightlifting and wrestling.
