is this while hanging? or did he stop ungrip bar, rest, then regrip bar and continue doing them? also was there someone observing him so that the form was correct on each rep(ie no 1/2 reps)....the link didnt open for me...this is why i am asking.

That's an extremely impressive feat.

Both the Fox news story I saw this morning and the ABC news clip on the net just explained that he performed the 2,446 reps over a 12 hour period. The video shows 3-4 people there observing him. The clip does show both underhand and overhand grip but it does not say how long his rest periods were. He beat the previous world record by over 200 reps. The reps they showed in the clip looked effortless. If you get a chance got to abcnews.com and check it out.

That's freakin crazy. That's all I have to say.

Chin Ups=compound exercise-one of the best pulling exercises...I have never called this exercise worthless...show me a post where I ever called chin ups/pull ups worthless....

I equate that many chin ups to running a marathon in like under 2 hours....something insane....basically endurance training...

is this the best way to get strong/muscular? probably not...though volume approach training does work for some. But despite having such great muscular endurance, he may not even be able to do 1 rep with 100 or more strapped to him....it's not like he does 2000 chins so that he can do 1 rm with 1000 strapped to him...this is also true for myself(or most others) always doing 1-5rm then huffing and puffing on anything over 8-10 reps ...

i can't even imagine being able to do 200 pull-ups in 12 hours. 3 sets of 10 pretty much destroys my arms for the rest of the day.

I tried to see how many I could get in one shift at work once (I work at a gym). I got to 500 in just over 2 hours and decided it sucks.

And KC, we're just intense in here because we've all snorted one too many ammonia caps.

This is *Jason* Armstrong and I'm the one who recently broke the record you are talking about. Just to clear up a few of the mistakes from the abcnews video, I only did 2,406 pull-ups and my record will not be kept by Guinness, but by the Book of Alternative Records.

To answer some of your questions:

I did not have to hang by the bar the whole time, but the clock did continue to run while I rested.

I did sets of 3-4 with about 35 seconds rest between each (at the beginning, more as time went on).

I didn't really train much for one rep maxes. The most I've lifted in addition to my bodyweight so far was about 140 pounds, which I managed for two reps. I have altered my training program since, and hope to break the 200 barrier within the next few weeks. I also can't do many consecutively, maybe 25 at the most (world record: 135 for overhanded pull-ups and 370 for underhanded pull-ups). My training involved about 300-700 pull-ups EVERY day, so my muscles didn't have enough time to recover and build up much strength, only massive amounts of endurance. I was also on a vegetarian diet for 4 months so that I could lose weight before the event.

This wasn't half the feat anyone seems to think it is... Running a sub 2-hour marathon would break the world record by nearly 5 minutes, and is quite possibly nearing the limits of humanity. Performing 2400 pull-ups was a far cry from my original goal of 3,000 and won't be anything compared to the next time I attempt this record, probably after a few more years of training. A 2-hour marathon is, in my opinion, about equivilant to doing 6000+ pull-ups in 12 hours, but we won't know for sure until both have actually been accomplished.

A little discipline at the table and at the gym might help reduce that belly!
