EXERCISE MYTHS - Week 1

Over the next few weeks we will discuss exercise myths - some of which might be preventing you from getting the right level of fitness in your own life. The surgeon general estimates that if more Americans got up and got moving that 200,000 lives each year could be saved. There is a lot of advice out there and we're going to try and help answer some of your questions.

Myth: "If I lift weights I'll be too muscular. I don't want to have a masculine physique."
A lot of women fear that lifting weights will make them appear bulky or too muscular. Strength training is NOT for men only. Women have less bone and muscle than men, increasing potential for diseases like osteoporosis. Muscle atrophy or loss of muscle mass increases a woman's risk as she ages. Generally women do not have the testosterone levels to achieve big, bulky muscles. Female body builders have to do a lot of extra things to achieve their physique - things that don't exist in most exercise programs.

Myth: "I want to boost my workout so I use light weights on my arms and legs."
You may see people with weights out walking or jogging, some even strapped to ankles. Exercise physiologists now say that this can be more harmful than beneficial. Added weight can slow you down, decreasing aerobic benefit. And generally the weight isn't enough to give you strength training benefits. You would be better off to lift weights that you can do only about 10-12 repetitions of. As you increase strength you can increase the weight to adequately stress the muscle. Do your aerobic exercise separately from your weight training.

Stay tuned…next week we'll explode two more myths!

Sometimes it's weird to me that people believe these things.

I don't understand why someone would put that much effort into an exercise program without first understanding what is happening.

Hey bill - The New Rules of Lifting is a good read. As is Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle (which is an e-book).
