Just recently i had a brief argument with my teacher and my friend. My teacher told me that deadlifts are for legs meaning legs are the main muscle used. She is a weightlifting teacher for probably 10 years now. I had to tell her she was wrong. Later in the day i was chatting with my friend on the computer and i told him what happened in school and he told me my teacher was right and i told him he was wrong too. Just so everyone knows; deadlifts target the erector spinae or lower back. Legs are only synergists meaning secondary muscles or muscles that are only used to assist the movement. While deadlifts will help your legs a little bit, squats are 100% better.

deadlifts are way better for your hams than squats. and it all depends on the type of deadlift you do (straight-legged, sumo, bent-knee).

Sumo deadlifts is a hips dominant exercise which can be said to be legs dominant exercise. Hack squats which is really a deadlift with barbell behind your body is a quad dominant exercise. Ditto for straddle deadlifts.

Wide(powerlifting) Squats work hips and lower back(posterior chain) more than quads.

Generally deadlifts do target lower back more so than legs. While squats target more hips/quads....but it all depends...

Deadlifts target the posterior chain. Glutes, Hamstrings, and low back. You hammies and Glutes are the primary movers. Deadlifting is all about hip extension. Glutes and Hamstrings are the primary hip extensors. Deadlifting is just as good for you as squats are. The lower back has to be very stable for the hamstrings and glutes to perform the work necessary to lift a good deadlift.

i'd have to disagree with you on this. although a deadlift is the 2nd lift on the list of compound lifts that work out the most muscles... squats are # 1.

but i still like bench better... :)

A squat works more muscles than a deadlift? That's news to me...

Me too. Care to explain?

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious.
