I know now that you don't have to go to "failure" when doing an exercise to get incredibly strong as some might want you to believe but for increasing the size of one muscle group, would you just have to go failure to increase of that area? For me i don't care for big biceps, triceps, etc. you know bodybuilding, but the only muscle group i'd like to increase the size of are my abdominals. Therefore should i continue with my training which i hardly ever go to failure on (terminate reps 1 or 2 before failure) but should i go to failure when working abdominals? or would i have to change something?

I only go to failure on accent to tell you the truth, I lift heavy as I can to hit 5 to 6 reps and sometime I fail.

For adding you need to eat to add and lift to add so for the abs eat well and do weighted abs.

For abs what hits me the hardest above all machines is a basic crunch (lying on back and hands to knees) with a 45 pound plate above chest held palms-up lying on forearms.

Hey i just found out about HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) according to some sources HIIT can improve performance over a shorter time period. Burns 50% more calories than steady state cardio while maintaining muscle mass. I figure i should read up more on HIIT and maybe incorporate this into my training regime.

Sure don't get me wrong, its not that big a deal if i got a big of flab on me, if anything it could help me for example when wrestling it could give me that extra boost for energy or a shock absorber but i'd still like stronger harder abdominal muscles.

I train abs like I do any other muscle....I am not above heavy singles for it...

failure is technically attempting a rep u cant do with good form or unable to do it period....eventho i tend to go til i cant do another rep....i rarely fail on that last rep....

abs are about nutrition....

HIIT/complexes are good at shedding body fat

I'll do low reps (<3) on some abdominal exercises, but for the majority of my abdominal training it is done in the 4-10 rep range. I occasionally fail, but it's not because I went for a rep I knew I couldn't get, so I don't train to or past failure on it deliberately.

I agree with 300th on this part, having a bit of flab can have its advantages as well.

Okay so i've read in the Abs and Obliques part of the Health Resources page, that theres tranverse abdominus, rectus abdominus and the external obliques and these should all be worked equally and not to focus just on one part. For maximum results nutrition is is very important. Now i know that all of these areas must be worked and change in nutrition is key for a complete physique.

Having visible dangling flab on you as an athlete is counterproductive. Dead weight you're carrying.

Yes you can get a 6 and even 8 pack. For that you must eat nauseously clean nutrition and lift heavy. Bottom line it takes dedication and patience.

read it.

Though if you want to make even better progress I would just about eat only complex/slow digesting carbs and cut out just about all fruits with exception of like avacados/tomatoes....Focus on eating lots of vegetables. Get in a nice variety.

This is a powerlifting forum... why are we even still discussing this?

If you want to believe that, then quit now...
