Cuz, really, this goes on forever...

Back in Feb of 2003 I joined a fitness challenge... I'm on my third go round in it and have some great stats to show a difference in my body.

- I've lost 18 pounds overall...
- Dropped my body fat by 10%
- Gained 7.1 pounds of lean body mass
- Dropped my fat weight by 25.1 pounds
- My hip girth went from 113cm to 105.t
- My waist went from 103cm to 90.5!

However, I need to do something about my heart rate... 72bpm... kinda high... Any tips...

Six weeks left in the fitness challenge and now I'm pumped! Thanks to this website and those in the fitness know!

Thanks guys! I'm not sure about the BP... I had it checked last time I gave blood, but never thought to get the results....

Our team seems to be doing okay...!

Thanks for the support!

Good job timday! I would say that a heart rate of 72bpm is good. Normal heart rate i believe is between 80 - 100. But there are thoose marathon runners that have there resting heart rates down in the 50's and 60's

heart rate is fine - some people just naturally have higher than others
If you do want to decrease I would recommend betablockers...
Only joking
Seriously - do more cardio especially HIIT and it may come down a bit but I wouldn't get too hung up on it

The lowest mine has been in this challenge over the last year is 68... so it seems fine to me... but I guess I can keep trying to lower it...

Overall, I'm happy with the things that have changed... a year ago I really wasn't into it.. now, it's a regular routine....

anywhere from 60-100 bpm is normal for adults.

If you track it and it goes up occasionally, it may mean you are on the verge of a cold or you are overtraining and fatigueing your heart. Make sure you aren't overexerting when you are doing cardio.

On a whim today, I decided to measure my right bicep.... back on October 4th, it was 12.5", then on January 24th it went up to 13"... today, March 21st, it's up to 14"! And, the left bicep seems to be keeping pace! WOO-HOO!! :dumbbell::dumbbell:

Tell me I'm not tickled about that!

Okay... today was the weigh-in in our 12 week fitness challenge... damn, three months can be a long time...

I did pretty well...

- My heart rate went down from 72 to 66...
- dropped 13 pounds...
- lost about 4cm on the waist
- 3cm gone from the hips...
- dropped right around 4% body fat.. now at 16.3%!
- lost about 10lbs of fat..

But, I lost 4lbs of muscle! I figure I may not have been eating quite right for gaining the muscle... I'll have to keep a closer eye on my diet...

Overall, I'm happy... now taking a week off (though I'll still wanna use the weights!) and then get back at it on Monday.

I also want to add a lot of the help in the weight loss came from this very site and the people on it!

Thanks!

Just on a side note... our team came in third out of twelve teams in the twelve week challenge... apparenlty the spread of points was very close, within about five or six... oh well! We did great and we're all proud of how we feel now!

We're getting into another fitness challenge here are work.. one of the guys says it was a good summer... lots of beer, chips... all that stuff.. I'm guilty too, but I was amazed at my numbers compared to the end of the last challenge I was in...

April 21/04
Weight: 182lbs
Waist: 87.5cm
Hip: 104cm
Body Fat: 16.3%
Fat Weight: 29.7lbs
Lean Mass: 152.3lbs
Heart Rate: 66bpm

Sept 1/04
Weight: 190lbs
Waist: 88.5cm
Hip: 104.5cm
Body Fat: 15.9%
Fat Weight: 30.2lbs
Lean Mass: 159.8lbs
Heart Rate: 78bpm

The fat weight went up (chips and beer), but the lean mass went up 7.5 pounds! I continued to exercise through the summer... the body fat went down too.. not by much, but almost half a percent... I'm giddy with excitment... haha...

Just to put this into perspective... I've been at this since February 2003 and have lost up to 28 pounds.. gained some back, but it appears to be muscle... my body fat has gone down 12.4%.. the lean mass has bounced around a bit, but overall, I've gained 8.9 pounds of lean mass...

Well, lemme tell ya.. I'm glad the past 12 weeks are behind me! Just wrapped up a twelve week fitness challenge. Here are the starting numbers:

Sept 1/04
Weight: 190lbs
Waist: 88.5cm
Hip: 104.5cm
Body Fat: 15.9%
Fat Weight: 30.2lbs
Lean Mass: 159.8lbs
Heart Rate: 78bpm

Here are today's numbers (November 24th/04):

Weight: 186.4lbs (down 3.6lbs)
Waist: 86 cm (down 2.5cm)
Hip: 103.5cm (down 1cm)
Body Fat: 16.3% (up 0.4%)
Lean Mass: 156.1lbs (down 3.7lbs - this really ticks me off)
Fat Mass: 30.3lbs (up 0.1lbs)
Heart Rate: 66bpm

Overall, I'm pleased with the progress over the last year and a half or so... just wish I could figure a few things out... Lean Mass loss... that bothers me...

BUT, I am MUCH healthier than I was two years ago! Thanks to this site!

Fitness Challenge Mid-point

I'm in a 12 week challenge... here's how things have been shaping up midway through...

Jan 21st/05 (March 2nd/05 )

BP: 102/60 (112/60 )
Heart Rate: 88 (100) (dunno why)
Weight: 194lbs (192lbs )
BMI: 27.21 (26.9)
Waist: 90cm (89)
Tricep: 9.4mm (10.5)
Bicep: 7.4mm (7.2)
Subscapular: 19.8mm (18.3)
Iliac Crest: 19.4mm (19.5)
Medial Calf: 8.2mm (6.3)
Flexibility: 31cm (32)
Grip Strength (R): 56kg (65)
Grip Strength (L): 52kg (60)
Close Grip Push Ups: 22 (25)
Ab Curls: 25 (25)

They timed the curls for one minute and the reps were based on a metronome... one beep, up ya go, one beep, back to the floor. Your fingers had to start on one piece of tape and reach to another without lifting your feet off the floor.

The push ups were more tricep ones with the hands shoulder width apart and as you lowered yourself you keep your arms close to your body. I was gunning for 30, but I'll get it in April. I KNOW it.

So, there it is... six weeks to go....

This is so very cool! To have these short-term challenges, adjust the short-term objectives for them consecutively and see such long-term results must be sooo rewarding, kudos to you for perseverance AND performance.

Okay, another twelve week fitness challenge is over... bring on the beer and hotdogs... ha!

Anyhoo.. here's how the numbers shaped up. The first numbers are from January 21/05, the second from March 2nd and the last from April 15th.

BP: 102/160 - 112/60 - 110/68
HR: 88 - 100 - 76
Weight: 194lbs - 192lbs - 192lbs
BMI: 27.2166 - 26.9360 - 26.9360
Waist: 90cm - 89cm - 88cm
Tricep: 9.mm - 10.5mm - 9.9mm
Bicep: 7.4mm - 7.2mm - 7mm
Subscapular(back): 19.8mm - 18.3mm - 13.1mm
Iliac Crest(side): 19.4mm - 19.5mm - 16.2mm
Medial Calf: 8.2mm - 6.5mm - 7.2mm
Grip Strength: R(56) L(52) - R(65) L(60) - R(67) L(62)
Flexibility: 31cm - 32cm - 34cm

Overall, based on what they were looking for in the challenge, my final numbers ranged from VERY GOOD with the flexibility to Excellent in the body comp rating, grip, push ups and ab curls.

The flexibility went from a GOOD to VERY GOOD.

I find it kind of funny because the last week I was more or less with the attitude "let's get this thing done." But seeing these numbers I'm in a better mood about what I've done.

Thanks Ivan... was sort of concerned about it... didn't really think I was giving it my 'all.' Actually pretty sure I wasn't. I know the numbers could have been better if I'd have tried a tad harder...

Well, my twelve week fitness challenge is over... some good numbers!

The start date was September 22nd, midpoint was (October 8th) and final was

Blood Pressure: 100/70 (106/70)
Heart Rate: 84 (76)
Weight: 199lbs (200)
BMI: 27.3079 (27.4451)
Waist (cm): 93 (91)
Tricep (mm): 13.2 (12.6)
Bicep (mm): 7.2 (7.2)
Subscap (back - mm): 196. (14.4)
Iliac Crest (side - mm): 21 (18.4)
Medial Calf (mm): 7.6 (7.4)
Flexibility (cm): 31.5 (34.5)
Push ups: 27 (27)
Ab Curls: 25 (25)

This felt pretty good... my goal on the pushups was 30... whew.. they are tough... the grip is shoulder width and as many as you can do in a row. The amount of ab curls I can do was the most you can do in the one minute you are given. They use a metronome for the up/down.

Felt good to get this done... now bring on the butter tarts and shortbread.

Some more information on this. Two different measuring
methods.

Did my body comp today (November 26th). Here's what happened. The numbers in brackets are the numbers from October 15th.

Method One:

Age: 39 (39) (ha.. that was constant... sorta)
Weight: 202.8lbs (203.2)
Height: 71.25" (71.25") (again, constant)
Neck 15" (15")
Shoulders: 49.5" (49")
Chest: 42.75" (43")
Waist: 36" (36")
Abdomen: 37" (37.5")
Hips: 37" (38")
Thigh: 23" (24")
Knee: 15" (15")
Calf: 15" (15")
Ankle: 9" (9")
Arm: 13" (13")
Forearm: 11.5" (11")
Wrist: 6.75" (6.75")

BF%: 16.73 (17.32)
BMI: 28.05 (28.1)
Waist to Hip Ratio: 0.97 (0.95)
Lean Body Mass: 168.88lbs (168lbs) +0.88lbs
Fat Mass: 33.92lbs (35.2lbs) - 1.29lbs

A lot of things didn't really change, mainly the hips and abdomen. Which is likely why the BF went down.

Not at all impressed with the Waist to Hip Ratio. That is bad. Need to work on that with my diet, I suspect. And with Christmas coming up, not so sure how that'll work. Although I did show some will power and not eat any cookies someone dropped off at work the other day. ha.

Some subtle changes with the gain in LBM and loss in Fat Mass. That's nice to see.

Overall, somewhat pleased. Not totally disappointed.

We'll see what the gyms thingamabob has to say tomorrow.

Method Two:

Just more or less a comparison with the method I use at home and the method at the gym. I know the numbers are different and the methods are different, but as long as the overall BF% goes down, it's all good.

They use and electrical impedence type machine called a Futrex to measure. Quick and painless.

The last time I had it done was June 12th. Numbers in brackets are from them.

Weight: 198 (200)
Blood Pressure: 123/77 (121/71)
Resting Heart Rate: 90bpm (113bpm - I had no coffee this morning)
BF%: 20.2 (21.8)
Lean: 158 (156)
Fat: 39 (43)
Water: 59.8% or 53.8 litres. I don't have the before.
Flexibility (Hamstring Stretch): 37cm (36cm)
Grip Right: 62 (65)
Grip Left: 56 (60)

So that's that. Seven weeks or so from now I'll get it done again.

I followed that with some cardio. I used the Concept II and did the following routine I found in Men's Health:

The 20-Minute Fat-Burner: Try Teti's routine. It's designed to max out your muscles during each interval, while the recovery periods help increase the rate at which you burn fat. Set the rowing machine at a resistance of four. Then perform sets of 10, 15, and 20 power strokes--pulling the handle to your torso as fast and as hard as you can. Separate the power strokes with 60 seconds of easy rowing at about 50 percent of your full effort. Repeat the cycle until you've rowed for 20 minutes.

I managed 17 minutes which included a two minute warm up and two minute cool down.

Whew.

Thanks, KC...

I've seen some big changes... started somewhere around 220lbs or so... lowest has been 185... now up to around 200lbs... I assume it's been muscle!

Those look like really good changes Tim. Not surprised though, you've trained hard all year, so congrats:big_smile: Just out of curiosity, do you have specific number goal in mind, or are you primarily focussing on strength these days.

I was hoping to get to about 12% BF by the end of the year.. but, apparently, I lost sight of that! haha...

It is doable, but I'd have to really focus on diet and it's tough when I'm the only one doing this (at this point). We do eat fairly reasonable, though.

What I would really like is to see more definition. But, again, diet. :)

I hear ya! I think it was Charlie that said he finally gave up on trying to push that low because he just didn't have the true desire to maintain that kind of diet dicipline...but it would be cool just to get down there and see eh....guess you have something to shoot for in 2007!
