Hi,

I'm going to be participating in a agility test soon for my entry into law enforcement. My stats - Male, 34 5'11" 185 lbs. I don't excercise regularly but have an active lifestyle, etc. (I'm not a couch potato)

I am having a really hard time with push-ups!!! I played sports through high school and also lifted during college so I'm not a weak guy. It has been a few years since being in the gym so I've got some work to do.

One of my agility tests is to do at least 30 push ups within a minute.

I can only seem to do 20 push-ups at a time at this point. I usually do several sets every other day, I try not to overdo it. The more I train, the less I seem to be able to do! By the end of the week 15 seems like all I can muster. If I don't do any for a week or more, it seems like I'm stronger around 20-25, if not a few more. I didn't think these would be a problem!

I'm looking for some advice as to how I should go about this. I am following the correct push-up techniques, etc. It is funny because I have muscle mass on my upper body, chest, arms, and look like I should be able to knock these things out... Help! ----R

I use to do 20 a set and now i do 40. Key for me was to just push myself to do one more each time and gradually, you'll get to 30 and 40. :dumbbell:

You know what I used to do when I was in the Army? I would do 10 regular push-ups, 10 wide arm push-ups, and then 10 close grip push-ups every day before I'd jump in the shower. When that started to get easy, then I'd add another 5 to each set. Its not that bad to do, and believe me... push-ups was the only thing that I would always pass with a charm!

Try doing some dumbell chest press and incline press.
