Ketones are a molecule in the carbonyl group (groups containing a carbon and oxygen bond). They are a form of energy formed in the liver by the breakdown of fat.

They are often found in secretions after long fasts or in hypoglycemic individuals, as well as other cases.

In biology, the presence of ketones are used to indicate a state called KETOSIS, which many people take to mean that the body is using fatty acids as the primary source of fuel.

Ketones are detected through the use of ketone sticks, which have a chemical used to detect the presence of ketones through a color change. The only disadvantage to this method of testing, is that when used externally, in order for the strip to turn purple, you must be secreting ketones, in other words there must be ketones that you are not using as an energy form.
