I have a question about leg pressing. I'm not trying to brag (at the weight I do its definitely not bragging ) I am just curious what a good target to shoot for is. What do most guys usually get to on a leg press? I did it today and maxed out at 505 lbs. My goal is to definitely do more, but just curious what most guys get to....

By the way my squat is only a measly 205 lb max, which I am definitely looking to improve... but is it normal to have that much variance between leg press and squat, and why is there so much difference?

Cause with the leg press you are not "lifting" all the weight. With a squat you are moving all of it. I have gotten up to 1100lbs for 4 reps......on the leg press.

Dude that was after YEARS of training. Some get there faster some do not
leg press in my opinion is not really all the great of a exercise. But some like Ron use it all the time for legs

I don't plan on 1000 overnight :) I am shooting to get to around 700-750 by this years end for my goal... that is a big jump, about 195-245 in a year but I think it is doable since I use to do 650 a year and a half ago when I stopped working out. 1000 is my overall goal, once I break that I hope to go for 1500 :)

I've gotten 1400....for reps....I never do it. Thing is I squat....ALL the time....if you squat alot, you can leg press alot.....if you leg press alot.....well....you can leg press alot.

Its ok for somthing to do for "bodybuilding" as for a test of strength.....not the best excercise.

In my opinion, Andrew's right on the money.

What I don't understand is, how come you have this "strength" goal for a lift like the leg press? What Andrew said, I've heard Gator say before, as well as other coaches.

Personally, I never saw much purpose in this lift, and I've also heard that it is harder on your back than even squats, but I'm also not an "expert."

what makes for such the huge variance in amount of weight you can move in a squat vs a leg press? i understand that you're not moving your own body weight, just the weight itself in a leg press, but we're talking 400+ lb differences. just curious.

Yea, I'm not sure why someone would set a leg press goal. Just doesnt make sense to me.

For starters, on a 30 degree leg press, you are moving exactly half the weight against gravity. Range of motion is much less. Factor in momentum, ease of technique/coordination, and the fact that it is so easy to cheat, ad you have a huge discrepancy.

If you can leg press a lot, you can leg press a lot. No one's going to give you a metal for a leg press though.

also to add....no lying i'm a big guy....and my ROM is like maybe 45degrees if that, and thats chest touching my knees. Every machine is different, some are like a lever, some are sleds....soem kinda glide or somthing.

If i do it and very rarly, its just to do somthing different and to get alot of work capicity in. (I don't like to do high reps on squats.) or I do them...one legged.

Good for calve raises!

The only time I've done leg press was single-leg press because a SAQ guy told me they were good for jumping. Whether they are no good at all, I don't know, but I'm pretty sure it should be trashed in the interest of athleticism (could be wrong).
