I cut leg extensions out of my leg routine a few weeks ago and have had no loss in muscle what-so-ever. I say loose them.

Leg extensions aren't that important an exercise anyways. Not all that efficient, so I would drop them.

Some smart guys on this site. Leg extensions can in fact put undue stress on the knees, and usually not do enough in the way of building to warrant the abuse.

I never had problems with them on my knees but holy smokes even with real thick pads, AND extra pads on top of that they KILL the front part of my leg (just above my foot). Totally CRUSHES them.. ugh.

I have a pretty serious leg workout two days a week. My problem is that the workout I have has leg extensions built in, but they hurt my knees real bad. I have tried lowering the weight to seriously 20lbs, but it still hurts. Right now I have done squats, leg press, lunges, and lying leg curl without any knee problems. I looked online for form when doing leg extension, but it just says to keep your knees aligned with the red dot which I do. If anyone can help me out with this problem I'm having with leg extensions I would greatly appreciate it.

P.S. - I have had some knee problems in the past with my mcl and lcl from track and soccer if that helps at all. Also when I walk up stairs sometimes my knee gives out and I pretty much fall if I don't catch myself.

Just FYI - I got up to 170lbs single leg, and now the knee pain starts. Not while doing them but a few days after. Not cool. So I will now become a 'smart guy' and remove them from my workouts, better safe than sorry!

OK I promised i would leave this but Ij ust can not. What possible reason would you do a 170lb leg ext with one leg? Are you daft? LOL, seriously ya think that the knee pain may be from the fact you used to much for that set?

ahaha come get me Mutt!

I thought the goal was to add weight as you progress, esp. if you have been doing this for 2+ years. I did them controlled and slowly, upping the weight when I can do a set of 12/12/12 reps. I worked my way up to that, following the exact plan that this website makes for me. Since I have no training except for what I am told here I guess your suggestion might be to remove it from the plans on this site? If so, please ask the owners to do so or add to the instructions at the bottom suggesting to discontinue when you reach higher amounts of weights. Perhaps it will save others like me who's only clue is the info I gather on the web and primarily this site.

Keep in mind, they make pieces of equipment and commonly have leg extension equipment at the gym, how would someone like me know that it was such a dangerous exercise? I thought this exercise was as common as a bench press. I never even thought it was bad until I started crushing body parts, and searched FT about it - which brought me to reading this tread!

Also, don't hold back on your comments, it is your (and the other's) knowledge that helps make this a great site!
