BB1, or anyone who can explain. In a previous post named "Strange Body" its says not to mix protein shake with milk. Any reason for this as I am currently doing so twice a day.

Just a bit of background, I am playing around with diet and gym work to see whats best for me before I start a routine.

if you have bought a low carb protein powder drink and you add milk- you now have a higher carb drink and additional fat and sugars(check the ingredients).. so it's fine in milk if it meets the nutritional requirement you have set yourself. Milk can be hard for some people to absorb without an upset tummy due to the lactose in it. Others like myself can drink gallons and feel nothing diferent. I use a low carb low fat whey so putting milk in would give me what I dont want in fat and carbs that would be better eaten as an apple in another meal... so swings and roundabouts for different horses for courses. I want to slim down so everytime I get the chance to substitute water for food is saving me calories. If you are bulking then you may choose the milk for the extra protein and fat or not? Try it without milk for a week and see which is more stomach friendly for you.

Neil is right on. I use milk with the shake only when I want a little treat. But, 99.9% of the time only water.

Thanks guys,

I thought there might be some kind of draw back like milk working against the protein or something, But it seems just to be the nutritional factor. Of which, I have already added the fat, carbs and protein from the milk into my daily calories needed.

Also I wasnt eating enough before I started so I am still findning it difficult to eat all the extra food needed to get to my daily calorie needs.

I will stick with the milk for the time being and when I eat more I will cut back on the milk and go to water.

Cheers,
Toad

After workouts you need a protein shake WITH water......yes its gross, somtimes lumpy, but if the water is very very cold, its easier to down, and have somthing ready to drink afterwards. Casin in the milk is a protein, however a very slow digesting one.(one of the slowest I think) EVeryone knows after work outs you need protin and amino acids as quick as possible right? Well mixing with milk slows down the digesting of your whey, which whey is a fast digesting protein, you buy it cause its clean and get to your muscls asap! With the milk, it makes the digestion slow down........so instead of the protein, amnios and water getting to you in 30mins, since it is in water......with mailk it may take 2hours or more to be comptley digested and absorbed to your body. I myself used to use milk, however when i started to frink it with water afterward I got alot stronger and gained abotu a god solid 3 or 4 lbs.
MIlk is not bad it comes in handy as well drink a protein shake before bed time with milk, the milk will make it slow down the digestion and you have your needed aminos for all night long. Thats preyy much all the "night time" protin shakes are.....whey with casin and fiber to help slow down digesting and keep you anibolic all night.

I refuse to drink it with water. I use skim milk. Fat free stuff that pretty much tastes like water to me by itself, but it makes the shakes tolerable. I agree with GG.

I'm with bigandrew on this one. What is the point in buying expensive whey protein if you are going to slow down it's absorption by adding milk? You may as well get your protein from a cheaper source if you are going to do this.
I mix mine with milk for an easy source of protein on non-weight training days but after a workout stick to water.

What if you were to drink it with milk a little before your workout?

IF you drink it with milk, its concidered a meal or snack.......cause it digest slower.......I liek to drink one with milk and non fat yogert before bed time, so i have protein for the night. Drink it with water after a wrok out to get protin to your muscles.

Befor e awork out is ok, howeve ri'd drink it an hour or so before hand, Somtimes milk may kinda "sour " your stomache adn make it upset.

Another thing, you really need some complex carbs for engery, protein is good, but the few carbs in milk won't give you much engery.........mix a lil "shake" up and put some oatmeal in it.......carns fo rengery and good protein.

Add simple sugars to your post workout protein shake. This will enhance absrobtion, increase blood sugar, cause an insulin spike which negates cortisol. Insulin will then "push" the nutrients into your hungry muscles. This is also why you need a fast absorbing protein like whey isolate or an isolate/hydrolosate blend. No casien proteins. This is the only time you want to do this, but you need to do it to shut down cortisol. If the right protein and amino acids are not present post workout, protein synthesis simply will not take place. Your injested protein will go to energ restoration and glucose first and be wasted as far as muscle building goes. You want all metabolic pathways geared toward muscle growth at this opportune time. Those of you who add milk post workout are missing out on the most anabolic opportunity of the day, and totally missing the boat with your gains. And one other note of interest, sure makes your protein taste better!

i would prefer keeping the yogurt (yoplait yogurt shake...meal replacement thing lol) mix, i guess i could switch it to night time but, would it make a differance if i drank the yogurt mix before the workout as apposed to drinking the water mix immedietly after? (sour stomach isnt a factor for me)
