I am a girl concerned about my weight, and therefore I tend to skip meals. My logic, granted it is MY logic, is that the more you eat the more you gain. Anyone have an opinion about this? Am I hurting my weight loss goals because I skip meals? :(

Yes, unfortunately when you drastically cut calories and/or skip meals, you slow down your metabolism and end up retaining fat. you also set yourself up for binge eating. Your body thinks you're starving. A much better option is to eat 5-6 small meals per day. Chose healthy foods from the grocery list for healthy eating, found in the food and nutrition forum. I like to eat 3 normal meals with a snack in between. My snacks tend to be oatmeal or fruit with cheese, or some other combination that includes healthy carbs and protien. My meals consist of a healthy protion of lean protien(chicken/fish/lean beef, eggs)plus healthy carbs like brown rice and lots of veggies. You are not alone in this misconception.

The more you eat the more you gain, isn't necessarily true. The thing you want to avoid is skipping meals. What you want to do is eat 5-7 smaller meals a day. Not 1-3 big ones. Having the smaller meals spaced out every 3 hours or there abouts will keep your metabolism up. You need to determine your maintenance calories and eat about 10% below them for the day. For instance, if you determine your maintenance calories are 2000 a day, eat 1800, spaced over say 6 meas at 300 each, and you should start seeing a 1-2 pound a week loss after a few weeks.
Skipping meals will slow your metabolism down and depending on how much you eat, for instance if your like a lot of women and starve yourself, that will slow it down even more. Not to mention if you do see a weight loss, it's not healthy, your losing lean mass. Best way to lose weight is like mentioned above, 5-7 smaller meals a day, like breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack, and eat just below your maintenance calories. I will IM you on how to determine your maintenance calories, check your inbox.

thanks everyone for the advice, tomorrow morning I will try to do better on my eating. I was thinking that if I have a cup of coffee, some fruit and maybe a piece of toast for breakfast, then for snack have an instant breakfast drink, then eat a small lunch, but I don't think you guys want to hear all about what I am planning to eat. Talk later:big_smile:

Actually, logging what/when you eat for a couple of weeks is a very good idea! It'll help you see what and how much you are really consuming. At each meal, try and get in some protien and healthy carbs, so add a bit of peanut butter to that toast in the morning and make sure the toast is whole grain! You'll be amazed when you look at a full week of what you've eaten...just make sure you include everything you put in your mouth..drinks, nibbles, butter, oil for cooking etc!!

What is the best way to get protein into my diet, besides a protein supplement? I am not getting enough in my nutrition goal plan. My calories I have cut down to around 1600 and carbs are around 150 and fats are about normal, sometimes a little higher than goal. But I am trying to lose weight, and I just started xenadrine EFX, is this going to hurt me or help me?

The best source of protein is lean meat such as chicken , lean beef or pork. A supplement is just that, it should supplement. As for Xenadrine EFx, in my opinion you should have bought some chicken

Thanks, atiger. Chicken has become so expensive though, have you noticed? lol, so eat more chicken or pork and I should get enough protein? Ok, will try more meat.

swee_tee, have a look at the "grocery list for healthy eating" in the diet and nutrition forum. It is thumtacked near the top. Choose foods from this list and you won't go wrong! Fish is another great source of protein and a can of tuna is pretty cheap. Low fat cottage cheese, low fat yogurt and eggs are all good choices as well. Try cottage cheese or yogurt and berries for breakfast or snack, it's one of my favorites!

i can find boneless chicken breast pretty much any time for $1.99/lb - bone-in chicken breast for less. It probably isnt much more and maybe less than the Xanadrine. Gorgot tuna which is good I just cannot eat it alot. Watch out for cereal since it could have alot of sugar. Try oatmeal and eggs

I have to agree with atiger on the Xanadrine...you're money would be better spent on quality foods. Learn how to eat right and get in some exercise, you'll have much more success with this than the suppliment!

its true that the more we eat the more we gain weight... but we must know what to eat as well. skipping meals can lead you to have ulcers or gastric problems later.. not good at all!! try eating light things so as not to gain weight
