As a quarter squatter was dominating the rack, I heard a conversation between an old powerlifter (easily in his 60\\'s) and what I would guess was his grandson (15-yrs old):

Kid: \\"So, why does he stop so short on his squats? That looks weird to me.\\"

Old PL\\'er: \\"He\\'s afraid if he squats deep, his vagina might touch the ground.\\"

good job guys.

Andrew that's awesome. I have heard very similar stories regarding smolov squat cycle also having big carryover to deadlifts for many people.

Is anyone else tired of hearing statements starting with "I am only..."? I take this as almost guaranteed bs before I even read what they have to say.

Good to see this is still at the top. Just pulled 335. While it's far from my best of 410 @ 145 (I'm now floating at around 170), it is a post injury PR.

I'm not sure what I can dead lift but I do reps with 275lbs? Deadlifting is by far my favorite workout. Its intense hard and I love it. ALthough I have only done it once which was last thursday I love the workout and am still feeling my way through it. Mainly I'm focusing on form and technique making sure i do everything correctly. Wether its stepping up dropping my ass getting my feet perfect. It is by far the best lift out of any. LOVE IT.

Woo Hoo getting healthier in the lower back as I got 2 easies set of 5 with 245 and stopped at 3 reps on 265 but could have done more but I didn't take a long enough rest so I didn't push it.

Goal is 5 reps with 3 plates on each!

JB, I pulled 375 at age 52/210 lb and squatted 405. I just don't do it anymore. Had to leave the weights ashore when we moved aboard the boat.

@ about what point do you implement a belt into your lifts?

As most know I'm still coming off a 3 year lower back injury but my lifts are starting to climb now and getting heavier as I'm getting allot healthier.

Last week I got 270 for 4 straight reps and the 5th after a pause and resetting myself for the lift, chalk only @ 195.

I have been a firm believer that the belt would have slowed my injury down and or possibly hurt it even more so but there must be a point were a belt will have to come into play.

I was thinking no belt until pulling 325 to 350.

I will say forms of squats and deadlifts has been a major factor in my back getting back into play, 3 years ago getting 70 pounds off the ground to do curls was a chore!

Glad you're getting better.
I think everyone is different when it comes to a belt. 2 days ago, I pulled 495 for a double on my 6th set with no belt. I'm not too concerned about my form until I get up to about 515 or so. Belts definately have their place, but at what weight one should wear them varies with the individual.

belts are unnecessary....i have done doubles at 675 no belt at 210...

i mostly get the benefits of the belt on squats and standing presses....it helps with the core stabilization more so than with the lower back...

it may help a little bit...by taking a little stress of the lower back but not that much...maybe 5-10%...so it gives a small margin of protection in case you go a little bit beyond your capabilities on a given day...

Another thing I heard about belts is that if you were to hurt yourself wearing one it would be a more severe injury then without one.

Eh, can't see how. Most back injuries that would be prevented with a belt are spinal injuries (herniated disks, etc) and I can't see how doing them with a belt would be any worse or better. This was discussed in my ergo class as far as workers using lifting belts, and we arrived at an "inconclusive" result.

365 the other day, post injury PR. Back is feeling better than ever. I'll be taking a week off from heavy spinal loading this week and then looking for 385 in a couple weeks. BW is floating around 165 again.

How many times are you going to post your lifts and ask if they are good?

If it's your max, then it's good for you. If you want to start comparing though then the average deadlift is probably between 185-225, but if you're comparing to Ed Coan he's gotten 890 at the same bodyweight as you.

Good is relative. What would be good is if in 8 weeks you post in this thread saying your max deadlift is 520lbs. That would be progress, and progress is always good.

I agree with wrestler125 to a degree. However, at 17 years old, 500 is very good. Never settle, continue improving.

515..in a single ply poly suit....

I'm no longer using a belt in my training or maxing...just the suit. So a big PR for me....never pulled more than 450 no belt.

Cleve 500 lb at 17 is very good. Like wrestler said, while setting goals and aiming high or looking at records is important, ultimately you're competing against yourself only. You are doing well so stop worrying about whether it's good or not.

Good job Andrew.

275 for 10 from a 3" deficit (standing on a box). Not a max, but I'm happy with it. Had my partner tell me when to stop based on my form and bar speed, he stopped me at 10. First time doing higher rep deads.

385 for some singles (post injury PR), I have a competition on the 12th, I'll be aiming for 2-3 reps at this weight. After that, I'll break 400 and hopefully start making heading above my all time PR of 415.
