Ok, just so everyone knows, I don't usually support those "how much can you lift" threads. However, 95% of those threads are geared to the bench press. Well, the bench press is the weakest of the big three, and it is far overrated as a method of determining overall strength. So, I propose a better measure of manhood. The deadlift. The deadlift is a complete total body movement, working from your forearms and hands, up to your trapezius, and back down to your toe flexors. It is one of the most technically difficult exercises, and proper form is a must. So, just out of curiousity as to the responses I will get:

How much can you deadlift???

335lbs at under 140lbs bodyweight. I know I could hit 365 (3.5plates) but I recently broke my foot. No squat work for at least a couple weeks, and deadlifting is out of the question.
I haven't maxed in almost 2 months, so as soon as I come back, I intend on hitting 365.

im at the same mark as you wrestler.. but at 160 lbs. deadlifting isnt part of my training right now.. i've substituted good mornings for awhile.

mine is 455 at 315 BW. Soon those will change I am close to 475. and I am planning to take a new approache to the BW thing. My over all goal for DL is 750. At a BW of 240

Thanks it will be a few years down the road i think but I will hit it. All my deads are done with just chalk and a belt in the 425 range and up

I have never found them useful believe it or not for my goals. On top of that, my form is so bad, I will end up hurting myself. I know my limitations, and I am an all out or nothing type of guy. I would add too much weight at some point and hurt myself. I have a tender lower back as it is, so it would be just tempting fate.

lol. I tried them the other day for the first time since football season sr year, and I only got 240. I am going to work on it though.

I have just got back into it...after taking couple months off....

at 210lb...I got 520lb unstrapped....and 650 with straps for an easy 1 after 3 reps of 600 with straps also...:) best part was having an assistant basketball coach watch me lift....and then ask me if I was a wrestler(lol...i always seem to get that...or a boxer)....I first thought he was one of the players for our team.....he looks pretty young...:)...I want to hit a 700 with straps...and 545 without straps....


bb1 that's a shocker....what kind of lower back work do you do? (just out of curiosity)

flyonthewall...just wanted to tell you that's a very impressive result....crawl under what rock? I'd be damn proud of that!.....you're stronger than most guys...because they don't have the drive to do it....

I am shocked that people back off deadlift as they get older in fear of injury....to me that seems counterintuitive...I would think the methods of training definitely will change...but the exercise is still one of the best for overall health....perhaps longer rest periods, more time between workouts, less weight, etc....this exercise helps you stay strong, active, and young....also with years of lifting I would think we all better understand out limitations and can better adapt this exercise to suit our needs....

I think this is a great thread.....imagine all the guys who come across this forum...'deadlift'? what the hell is that? ...and 1 more person is converted...:)

menace - for a lot of folks, me included it's not a matter of not liking the exercise for fear of injury, it's a matter of avoiding a re-injury. Once you've spent a year or so immobile you try everything once you get the capability to work out again but you avoid like the plague anything that doesn't feel right.

That was the idea behind it. Everyone knows what the bench press is, I just got tired of hearing about it. Hence, the deadlift thread.

Charlie, I admire that that you can proudly state your weights, even though you clearly "dislike" them. To me, it is that kind of attitude that means more than anything else.
It's so much better to hear that than "I don't want to do anything that is hard".

Well I'm fairly new to them and haven't done them in a few weeks since I changed my program. However in a 4 week program I started out with maxing at 115 and that killed me (first time I ever did them). By the end of the 4 weeks I was up to 195 for 4 reps. That's at 140lbs bodyweight at the time.

After I get this hernia surgery out of the way this week and can get back to lifting heavy after a few weeks probably, I'm gonna be working to get this up to 250.

To clarify the hernia had nothing to do with the DL's. I had this for several years. It's never caused any discomfort...just kind of unsightly (wasn't visible when I weight 30lbs more) and I can feel it pop when I do DL's and Squats. So getting it fixed before I make it any worse.

I heard some old geezer was chasing stump down the road and he busted a gut running from him.

Wrestler I so alot better at squats. Had rotator cuff surgery a couple of years ago and I only did my rehab and lower body for a year. I'm really proud that I can bench my weight. It's not alot but it took a buttload of work. I never complain about aging but it really is harder to make gains now than when I was 25. That's the last serious thing you'll ever hear me say.:big_smile:

Could have been Charlie! Think someone caught it on video and sent it in to America's Most Wanted or something.

You know what the worst part about this hernia is. I really have no clue when/how it happened. That's how out of shape I was before. Glad to be getting it taken care of though...I think I've been a little shy from day one to load up too much weight because of it. So once it's fixed and I get back into my routine I expect my maxes to go up across the board. Which works well cause I've lost all the weight I wanted to lose, so in this down time I'm gonna work out a new bulking diet to pick up when I'm ready to go.

Hey stump - make sure your doc spends some time with you before he lets you loose so you know what you can and can't do in the gym. They're usually over conservative but it never hurts to ask.

charlie that's really impressive...no wonder you're moving your boat around.....it's even more impressive that you do it despite disliking it.....

Mike did you get injured deadlifting? and if so were you doing it with correct form? I think it's much safer than almost any other lift there is...bench press, squat, ....with correct form, good warm up and appropriate weight it's one of the safest lifts there are...

I love deadlifts quite a bit ebcause just a few years back when i was squatting 185 for few reps, I tweaked my lower back....the pain was with me for over 6 months....nagging pain....once I started doing deadlifts....after a few months it disappeared....now my back is my strongest bodypart simply because I wanted to make it so....back is the foundation and center of our body.....I trully consider deadlift a #1 exercise....it's nice to say I got so and so deadlift but it's even better to know you got some insurance policy against back pain and in case something goes wrong or you need a bit of back strength to pull you out of awkward situations....


Stump might has a very good point...be very veyr careful.....I suggest using 70-80% of your previous 1rm as your current 1rm....and doing all the %s from this....so 70% of 70%....and use plenty of warm up sets....

The last cycle of maximum strength that I suffered through, I pulled 525lbs natural (no straps, belts, suits, etc.) at 165lbs. Since then I've given up on my quest to be a powerlifter and put about 15 or 20lbs on and haven't been through a maximum strength cycle since! My squat was almost 550lbs and my stability dumbbell push was at 120lbs each.

menace - It wasn't any one thing that hurt my back just a lifetime accumulation of over doing things. :) What took me out was a guy sliding into second that flipped me end over end and put me in a chair for a year before the navy finally decided it wasn't going to get better on its own. I agree with you and used to love deadlifts but it's one of the few exercises that makes me feel like the back is on the edge and I ain't going there again if I can help it. :)

Nelly, why did you give it up??? A 525 DL would have been very competitive at the 165lbs weight class. I believe the IPF and APF records are only about 65 to 80lbs over that, with belt and suit.

No to dicredic the dl.....but i've read(in bodybuilding mags) so dont' jump down my throat lol.....that the dl for bodybuilders is known to thicken the waist or somthing like that.....even so with free squats.....which is why many bodybuilders use smith machines or only partial dls in a rack.

I read the same thing Andrew...however my waist is still at 34 ....it's more about nutrition....although I don't push out my abs on deadlifts and squats the way some powerlifters do...although i started now to try to bring up my squat...at this rate i'll soon be curling more than I can squat LOL...

I've had 3 reconstructive shoulder surgeries, 2 heart surgeries and my hip is trashed. All of this happened before I graduated high school. Every session of maximum strength training makes me so stiff and sore that I'm barely able to function at work.

yep...I get pretty severe DOMs also...can barely walk up the stairs or stand up/sit down etc...after heavy squats/deadlifts....sometimes laying in bed hurts after heavy deadlifts...but afterwards I lift more than before and am stronger than ever...with added explosiveness...

...although I know I can't quite relate to you in regard that you have gone through bunch of surgeries and have to be much more cautious...

Think there comes a time in a persons life that if your not an athlete, or training for max weight.....you just have to do what your body lets you. Part of being healthy is keeping your body in working order.

Wel said BA. I have found that to continue to work out I needed to be less wild eyed and more realistic with my goals. I have settled for a 90% clean diet and not trying to hit PR's so often. This helps me to be consistant about sticking to a program.

I think if anyone is able to do full squats or bench presses....they can deadlift...whether they choose to is another issue...but on the other hand there are plenty other exercises to effectively train lower back....so to each his own...

u hear right Andrew....Ronnie Coleman actually is pregnant....6 months i believe....going to have a baby boy...

Thats bull. Ronnie didnt get a GH gut as they call it from deadlifting. He got it from the massive amounts of growth hormone him and other contestants were taking. In fact, I believe the IFBB or whatever other governing body that hosts the olympia passed a rule saying that they were going to start cracking down on that.

Well I was just stating, that raw power isn't for everyone....who knows....when I get older I may have to "retire" a few of the lifts I do, or not do them as often.

I don't even know who Ronnie Coleman is. But it's a neat trick if he's pregnant. I lift so I can do what I want to do...push a 10,000 lb boat outta da mud, pull a starter cord on a pissy outboard 75,000 times until it succumbs to my will for it to freakin start, fight a 50 lb fish all day long, pull an anchor with a power cable hooked to it, screw till my eyes bleed, hoist a Detroit Diesel out of the engine room etc. At my age fitness for fitness's sake or strength for competition doesn't do me any good.

I still enjoy reading and learning from you young pups and wish I'd had my shit together like you when I was your age. I was busy drinking, smoking, chasing skirt, and saving for a boat.

Sorry for the delay...not at work today.

I wish I could say my hernia happened while squating a Buick at the gym...unfortunately it's been there for years and I just started working out in March of this year.

I don't anticipate it being an issue when I get back. Doc said the type of procedure he's doing I could feasibly go to the gym the next day and push as much weight as normal and not have any issue...I just won't feel like it for 4-5 days. He called it a tension free procedure, essentially they're just going to plug up the hole and put a mesh over it, rather then stitching the muscles back together. So no amount of weight will cause it to reoccur. I'm sure he'll give me some tips and I'll take it easy for a while anyways. Regardless I'm afraid I'll mentally try to compensate for it, thus cause some other problem. So I'm gonna stick to my cardio for a few weeks till the incision is healed completely either way.

I'll keep ya posted though...not looking forward to being layed up this weekend though.

straight leg deadlifts are currently at 285 for sets of 10 overhand grip. I'm sure I could do more, but I'm REALLY cautious when it comes to back exercises. Patience is a virtue is what I keep telling myself. :)

im tryin to find out where i recorded my overhead squat... cant seem to find it. i know it was between 115 and 135 tho... i didnt really like it... i guess i just wasnt used to it. what i really am not a fan of though is the front squats... those dig into my shoulder so bad. but with westside it seems i will get my chance to do those aaallllll over again. so we will see how i do on those when i get to them. and i am worried now that they might cause havoc on my shoulders since a reg military press with db makes them hurt and pop a little.
