You will need a bar or a broomstick. They are usually sitting around in the gym somewhere. Sit on the end of a bench, back straight, with the stick resting across your back and shoulders. Kepping your back and head in a straight line twist to the left and the right be sure to hold at the end of the twist. You should feel a pull in your obliques. I hope I explained this well enough. I think I confused myself.

Ok, start by sitting at the end of a bench, feet flat on the floor. Hold a broomstick or bar behind your neck as if you are doing a press.
Now, twist your upper body to the left while tightening you obliques, and you have it. Repeat to the other side.
Hope this helps.

You can put weights on the bar as you get advanced...

Ok....so I will try it that way....
Is there any other exercise I can do to work the same muscles? Other than crunches and leg raises?

I don't know what it is called but, my gym has this thing that you lean the side of your hip against so you're at an angle then you do side beds. It works great...wish I knew what it was called.

Taurie , I think you mean "oblique crunch on hyperextension platform" . The description and pix are in the FT exercise resources.

BINGO TAURIE...ANNAP, if you do side bends on the angled thingy, as you come up, turn to the front a little so you work the obliques completely...hard to explain.

hey everyone... Um this is my first week in doing my program and I have no idea on how to do anything. This week is based on 'Side Laterals' 'Chins Between Chairs' 'Can Curls' 'Dips behind the back' 'Home Squats' and 'Calf Raises' Does anyone know where I can find information and steps on how to do them?!

Check out "Fitness Resources." It breaks down all the exercises there...

Welcome to FT.

Side Laterals

Stand upright, with your feet about shoulder width apart and your arms to your sides. Hold a dumbbell in each hand, with your palms turned toward your body. Keeping your arms straight, lift the weights out and up to the sides until they are slightly higher than shoulder level. Then slowly lower them to your sides. It's important to keep your palms turned downward as you lift the dumbbells so that your shoulders, rather than your biceps, do the work. Make sure you lift the dumbbells on the way up rather than "swinging" them up. Don't lean forward! Keep the dumbbells at your sides.
