Anything that get your heart level up is good... What every you pick make sure you can see your self doing it long enough to be effective. The 20 to 30 mins with your heart rate at 60 to 70 % of max feels like a long time you need to enjoy yourself while you do it. That will help keep you there and working out!

Yes, 20 minutes of cardio as a minimum. Since you're just beginning a workout regiment, I agree with DEBIDDO that 60-70% of max heart rate is good and sustainable for starting out. Once you feel more in shape, working in the 75-85% range will be achievable and get your cardio in great shape.
Good luck

There's also a good article on HIIT cardio in the Related Articles section.

Ok, thank you for all of the advice. But I have a few more detailed questions. How do I determine the 60 to 70 % of max? Also, when using the efx machine, any particular "setting" I should use? THank you for all the help...it means a lot!

The formula for determining heart rate is 220 - age = max heart rate. Then the percentages can be calculated from there using that max heart rate figure. For Example: 220-43=177. So, 177 * 80% = 141.6. This is a general formula and isn't as accurate for those that are in good shape. However, for those that are starting out, this is a good tool.

Good luck
