I just took two weeks off from working out, and came back more energized and stronger than i was before. I think everyone needs a break once in a while.

So when is a good time to take off. After 10 months of training or after a eight or 12 week training period?

Actually you should take a week of every six weeks.

After ever eight weeks i take a week off from lifting and just do cardio in the morning right after i wake up...then hit the gym again. If i feel like it, i take off more than a week.
rest is good for ya, especially after you just spend a couple of months tearing apart your muscles.....
the toughest thing about it is staying out of the gym though, but it is good for ya, at least for me
